Student guide to generative AI with four binding practices

A published guide addressed to students positions generative AI as a producer of drafts rather than an authority. It teaches prompt construction from a minimal three-part form up to a five-part template, maps use onto the levels of Bloom's taxonomy, and closes with four practices: withhold identifying data, verify critical claims against at least two sources, treat the course instruction as binding, and state the purpose for which the tool was used.

Account of the practice

The guide is one half of a pair issued together by the same faculty, and the pair is instructive for the matrix. The student version operates inside the learning situation: it works on how a task is approached, how an output is checked and how a declaration is written, which places it at the micro level. Its counterpart addresses academics and operates on course design, assessment and research workflows, which places that one at the meso level. The same institution therefore appears at two levels with two instruments rather than one instrument addressed to everyone.

The student guide is distinguished from generic advice by the operational character of its rules. Verification is specified as at least two reliable sources for definitions, rules, figures and references. Disclosure is specified as a statement of purpose rather than of tool. Compliance is specified as deference to the course instruction, including the case where the instruction forbids use, in which event the guide directs the student not to use the tool at all rather than to declare it.
